"Every country in the world loved the folklore of the West--the music, the dress, the excitement, everything that was associated with the opening of a new territory. It took everybody out of their own little world. The cowboy lasted a hundred years, created more songs and prose and poetry than any other folk figure. The closest thing was the Japanese samurai. Now, I wonder who'll continue it." - John Wayne |

Picture you and the Duke side
by side
LUBBOCK,
Texas (AP) -- You, too, can stand shoulder to shoulder with the
Duke.
Pilar Wayne, John Wayne's widow, will paint anyone into oil
scenes of the movie star for a fee. She displayed her work Thursday
as the National Cowboy Symposium honored her late husband with a
Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mrs. Wayne has immortalized the actor in scores of oil
paintings since his 1979 death. An original portrait of Wayne costs
about $250,000.
"Last spring was my fifth year to show my exhibit in
Paris," Mrs. Wayne said. "They really love him over there.
Everyone loves the Duke."
